Xylazine Detection in Drugs of Abuse Testing | Medix Biochemica

Xylazine is rapidly emerging as a significant contaminant in the illicit drug supply, often found alongside synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. Its increasing presence is creating new challenges for clinical and toxicology testing laboratories. 

One key issue is that xylazine is not detected in standard opioid screening methods. In overdose situations, naloxone reverses opioid effects but has no impact on xylazine. As a result, patients may not respond as expected, increasing the risk of severe outcomes.  

This gap is driving a need for more reliable ways to detect xylazine.
